Friday October 2nd, 2009 - 6-9 pm - First Friday: Autumn Harvest and Haunted Bucks County

Join us for our free museum open house and free activities.  Families will be able to try their hands at working a cider press, shelling corn, and threshing wheat. While participating in the harvest festivities take a break to sip apple cider refreshments and listen to the sounds of folk music.  There will also be two presentations of the lecture "Haunted Bucks County" at 7 and 8 pm.  Learn about local ghosts that haunt the area,  and other things that go bump in the night.

 
Friday October 9th, 2009 - 7:30 pm - Savory Sampler

Join your friends and neighbors for the 32nd annual Savory Sampler, Bucks County’s premier food and wine tasting event. Once again, the Mercer Museum brings together
The best of the area’s culinary treasures for an unforgettable evening. Tickets are
$150/$125 BCHS members. Tickets for the Patrons’ Preview Party, a champagne reception held prior to the start of Savory Sampler, are available for an additional $75.

Saturday October 10th, 2009 - Fill 'er Up! Vintage Gas Stations of Bucks County

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first successful oil well, and the birth of the American Oil Industry in 1859, the Museum presents this exhibit of vintage photographs of filling and service stations from the 1920s through the 1960s. Many of the images are drawn from the Milton Rutherford Photograph Collection, housed in the Museum’s Spruance Library. Photos are supplemented by artifacts from the Mercer and local private collections. Included with museum admission.

 
Sunday October 18th, 2009 - 2-4 pm - Classic Canal Photographs of 100 Years Ago

Join local historian, Will Rivinus, on a century-old journey through the Delaware Canal and River corridor. Rivinus will present 80 images of the canal and river captured by John Anderson, a native of Lambertville, New Jersey and one of the area’s earliest photographers. Included with museum admission.

 
Sunday October 25th, 2009 - 1:30-3:30 pm - All That Remains: A History of Cemeteries and Funeral Customs

Just in time for Halloween, historian Bruce Stocking returns to the Mercer Museum to “unearth” the fascinating history of graveyards and funerary rituals, from ancient Egypt through the nineteenth century. The program features an illustrated presentation on gravestone art and evolution, and up close viewing of antique funerary artifacts from the collection of Robert Rees. $10/$8 BCHS members. What lurks in the shadows of the Mercer Castle? Discover the history and folklore of some of the museum’s more chilling and ghoulish objects, including a hearse, gallows, “witch” doctor's canes, brooms and more on this seasonal nighttime tour. Appropriate for ages 8 and up. $12 adults, $10 BCHS member adults, $8 youth (12 and under), $6 BCHS member youth. Reservations recommended, call 215-345-0210, ext. 123.
