Using the Library

Researchers must sign in at the reference desk at the beginning of each visit. Researchers are permitted to bring note-taking material only into the Reading Room, which includes laptop computers and/or devices such as Ipads. Scanners or similar devices are not permitted.

Digital photography — including the use of cell phone cameras —  is permitted in Reading Room for a daily use fee of $5.00. Please request an “On-Site Photography Permission Form” and return to Library staff prior to photography. Items not permitted to be photographed are visual and graphic materials and items too fragile to be handled. Requests to photograph these materials must be directed to the Collections Manager ( or 215-345-0210 x119). Professional cameras, copy-stands and additional lighting are also not permitted without prior arrangement.

Patrons may help themselves to books shelved in the Reading Room but are asked to leave books on carts to be re-shelved by Library staff. Call slips are available to request collection items from closed storage. Call slips must be filled out completely with full name and address. Patrons will be given one folder or collection item at a time.

Photocopies for research purposes can be made of most Library collections. Copies on 8.5 x 11 paper are $0.50 per page; copies on 11 x 17 paper are $0.60 per page. Payment for photocopies can be made by cash or check. The library cannot accept credit cards as payment. Copies can be produced from microfilm. Library staff reserves the right to refuse photocopying due to age and condition of collection items.

For more information about the library, call our reference desk at 215-345-0210 x141.
