Built between 1908-1912, Fonthill Castle was the home of archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramist, scholar and antiquarian Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930). Mercer built Fonthill Castle as his home and as a showplace for his collection of tiles and prints.

The castle serves as an early example of reinforced concrete and features forty-four rooms, over two hundred windows, and eighteen fireplaces. Fonthill Castle’s interior features Mercer’s renowned, hand-crafted ceramic tiles designed at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Fonthill Castle is open for guided one-hour tours.

Fonthill Castle is a unique historic site! It offers limited accessibility with steep stairs and narrow, uneven passages throughout the interior of the site.

Fonthill Castle is not recommended for those with limited mobility, issues with stairs, those who cannot stand for long periods of time, or those with concerns about small spaces/claustrophobia.

Fonthill Castle tours may not be suitable for younger children under the age of 5, as tours last 60-minutes and may be challenging for the patience of toddlers.
